My New But Old Wheel

I got this wheel from my knitting buddy, Barbara in Mesa, AZ. It arrived just yesterday and now I'm oiling it and trying to get the hang of it. I think this picture shows it's unique character. And, I don't mean "oh she must have a lovely personality (because she certainly doesn't have the looks!)" Actually, I love the way this wheel looks. Now the learning begins... Posted by Picasa

are the hooks on the top so you can control tension?

Okay, seriously, you need little black rectangles over the previous pic. I'm not sure why, but it's titillating, sexy, and it makes me uncomfortable and I'm going to complain the the FCC.

Humph, anyway, the whole wheel has a very utilitarian German "get the job done und make zem beg for more" air to it, so I expect that you will eventually really enjoy yourself.

That's what it is!
I couldn't figure it out, but you've nailed it (pun intended).
As for the FCC, I guess you've noticed the subliminal messages in my photos now. Shoot...I'll just have to be more creative, although not everyone is as perceptive as you, my dear.

I love the antique quality of the wheel. Do you know how old it is? (or is it old? cannot tell). Would love to see it sometimes.

If you want some history on the wheel, you might be able to find out from Woodland woolworks.

I hope you and the wheel have made friends by now. She is a sweet little thing and does a great job with little effort. I am not sure if the extra wheels bolted to the upright are additional whorls to change the ratio or not. I didn't use it enough to need to find out.
